Hendersonville ~ John William "Bill" Winfrey, 94, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at Universal Healthcare of Fletcher. He was born January 18, 1912 in Sibley, MO, son of the late Clarence W. and Myrtle Jones Winfrey. He and his late wife, Mary M. Winfrey were married for 71 years prior to her death in June, 2006. He was a former resident of Shawnee Mission, KS, but lived in Hendersonville, NC for the past two and a half years. After attending the University of Missouri for two years, he started his career as a milk tester for the Pure Milk Producers Association in Kansas City, MO and later was promoted to Assistant Manager. In 1955, he became manager of the American Dairy Association of Kansas in Topeka until he retired in 1977. He was also a member of Kiwanis in Topeka. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Lance Blakely and two sisters, Annabel Barnett and Marjorie Jordan. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara A. Andrews and her husband Don of Hendersonville, NC, Marilyn Skau and her husband Tom of Mooresville, NC; two grandsons, Dr. Kent W. Blakely and his wife, Dr. Linda Blakely of Kearney, NE and David Admire of Mooresville, NC; three great granddaughters, Lauren, Maike and Natalie Blakely of Kearney, NE; two brothers, Glen Winfrey of Lee's Summit, MO and Joe Winfrey of Kansas City, MO and two sisters, Virginia McKay of Kansas City, MO and Grace Wilcox of Gladstone, MO. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on October 9 at New Salem Funeral Home, 1823 Blue Mills Road, Independence, MO. Interment will follow in Buckner Cemetery in Buckner, MO. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
