Arden - Johnsie Lee Whitaker Crompton, 71, died at her home Saturday, after a long illness with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was a native of Buncombe County and the daughter of the late J. B. and Lola Mae Ramsey Whitaker. She was a charter member of Arden First Baptist Church where she taught pre-school children in Sunday school for approximately 40 years. She was a former inspector with C.P. Clare for 16 years and a nurse’s aide for more than 6 years with the Crescent View Retirement Community. Mrs. Crompton is survived by her husband of 52 years, William J. Crompton; three children, Lynn Crawford and her husband Tom, of Plant City, Fla., Billy Crompton and his wife Susie, of Martinez, Ga. and Sheila McClellan and her husband Leon, of Arden; three sisters, Clara Edmonds of Oakley, Lucille Woody of Enka, Sarah Fore of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Joe Whitaker of Newport News, Va., James I. Whitaker of Asheville; five grandchildren, Jenny and Melissa Crompton, Carole and Chris Crawford and Justin McClellan and a great-grandson, Gavin Peterman. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Monday in the Arden First Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. Dan Stephenson and G. Scott Lynch. Interment will follow in Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Arden First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3839 Sweeten Creek Road, Arden, NC 28704. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, is in charge of arrangements.
