Joseph Henry Brooks joined his heavenly Father in eternity on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, after a long illness. Joe was born August 12, 1915 in Grenada, MS to the late Lake and Gretelle Brooks. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 15 and served six years before receiving an honorable discharge. Over the years, Joe was a boxer and a bowler and had won various titles, medals, and trophies, the last one being First place in the Senior’s Bowling Tournament held in Raleigh. He lived in West Palm Beach, FL for many years before moving to the Asheville area in 1989 where he attended the Candler House of Prayer. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Thompson Brooks; a son, the Rev. Gary Brooks and his wife the Rev. Lynn Brooks, and grandchildren Naomi and Philip as well as a host of other friends and relatives. Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Waldrup officiating. His family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Graveside rites will be at 2:00 pm Friday at St. Anna Cemetery in Pembroke.

  4. Grandpa, I saw a cute little chimpanzee and Philip and I said it reminded us of you because he was making a funny face like how you used to always do. You always made us laugh. You were the best grandpa I could’ve ever asked for and I think of you daily. I have a picture of you on my fridge with a nascar hat on backwards makin a silly face. I miss you and love you so much. Visit me in my dreams grandpa!
