Rochester, NY
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Joseph Lippa, 101, formerly of Clarence Center, NY, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024 of Asheville, NC, in his Bella Vista Retirement home.
Born on March 9, 1923, Joe lost his father just a year later, and with his new step-father, mother and sisters, experienced the Depression. They lost two stores and two homes causing them to move several times throughout NY state. That entire experience was imbedded deeply into Joe’s value system.
When Joe graduated high school, he joined the Army Air Corp becoming a bombardier and then a navigator. During several of his missions, he witnessed several of his groups’ planes shot down. Those men lost were never forgotten.
Once home from the war, Joe went to college, graduate school and completed the course work for his PhD in Psychology. An auto accident, a head injury and a long hospital stay prevented the thesis, but he was certified a psychologist without it. He worked in Western New York as a Psychologist with children for the Erie County Health Department, Kenmore School District, and part time with Gateway Longview Home for Children.
Once retired, he and Joan visited Asheville, NC, several times visiting family and moved there in October, 2003.
Joe was the cherished husband of Joan for 46 years. A member of the “Greatest Generation,” he was preceded in death by daughters, Carmine Gaidasz and Lucia Majewicz. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Mary Lippa; son, Louis Lippa; two step-daughters, Beth Dobson (Michael), Pamela Freshour (Dennis); step-son, Steven Sims (Cheryl); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Covenant Community Church, 11 Rocket Drive, Asheville, NC 28803. His family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice or to ABCCM, 1845 Brevard Rd., Arden, NC 28704, or to Covenant Community Church, 11 Rocket Dr., Asheville, NC 28803.

We here at Pawn World would like to extend our condolences to the entire Lippa family. Joe always brought a smile to each of our faces when he visited our shop. We never heard a harsh word come from his lips, he was one of a kind and will be sorely missed. Rest well Joe…
R. I.P Joe, a true gentleman. Sending prayers from across the pond.

Joan and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences to all of you. Joe and Joan both were so pleasant and friendly during my visits to asheville to see and help with the Dinger twins and family.
May your many wonderful memories and shared experiences help you through this very difficult time.
Joe left quite an impressive, meaningful legacy.
Sincerely, Peggy Dinger, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Very kind words that mean a lot! Joan his wife
Joe was my neighbor for a number of years in Cowell Farms. Joe and wife, Joan were beacons of light. Joe was amazingly talented with a variety of projects including gardening, landscaping. The most memorable feature of Joe is his beautiful smile. Love and Prayers to Joan, Family and Friends.
So many thanks!
You are in our prayers, we love Joe and miss you. Albert & Velda Freeman
Missing you too!
I never met Joe, I am a member of the Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club. I read where Denise Frey sent out a notice on Joe’s passing. I read his obituary and noted both his life and his military service, as a veteran and an army retiree, out of respect for his service I plan on attending the memorial.
Grandpa and Joan,
Thank you for always being there for me all of these years, even though we were physically far away.
Grandpa, I will miss all of our discussions. I always loved talking to you, and listening to your opinions and stories. It helped me understand myself better.
Joan, my condolences for your loss, and thank you again for your love and support.
Let’s please be in touch as much as we can!!!❤️
Joe was in the 9th Air Force during WWII. He once told me that the hardest bombing run he and his group ever participated in was done with the goal of destroying a German ball bearing plant. It was always a pleasure seeing Joe and I enjoyed his stories of times long passed. RIP.
May God welcome you to a much better place and comfort your family.
😀 I am pretty sure Inmet you there!
✝️Amen!! And thank you
Since Joe and are second cousins and separated by states we would communicate with greeting cards and phone calls. Then FaceTime, too. He sort of stepped into the shoes of my uncle Matt (Amedeo Coccia) when he passed away. Joes mother and my grandmother Ersilia Bianchi Coccia were sisters. Always to be missed.
