Joyce Ray Parham, 84, of Leicester, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at her residence. A native of Yancey Co., Mrs. Parham was a daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Remee Ray. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Parham, who died in 2008; and her siblings: Gertrude, Lucille, Edith, Mary Frank, Inez, Atlas, Addison, and Walter. Before starting her family, Mrs. Parham graduated from Cecil's Business College and worked for a number of banks in Asheville. She retired from the Bank of Asheville where she received their President's Club award on two occasions. Mrs. Parham loved to spend her time sewing, cooking, and especially gardening. She had an uncanny ability to pinch and root most any plant or flower. She was also an active and dedicated member of Newfound Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school class and Bible school. Mrs. Parham always put her family first, and had even been taking care of her great-granddaughter two days a week up until one month ago. She is survived by her daughter, Celia Parham McClure and husband David; sisters, Elsie and Joncille; brother, Bobby; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn McClure Clough and Victoria McClure; and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Clough. Mrs. Parham's family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Newfound Baptist Church. A memorial service will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Maynard and the Rev. Johnny Stone officiating. A private interment will take place in the church's cemetery. Memorials may be made to Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery, c/o Marie Roberts, 1147 Old Leicester Highway, Asheville, NC 28806. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  8. Mrs. Joyce was one of the finest ladies I have had the priviledge to know. She was in my Sunday School class at Newfound and I loved hearing her expound on scripture. A true blessing to have known her.

    Our prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Your mother was a very special lady . Everytime we saw her she was such a blessing to us. Always had an encouraging word for everyone. She will sure be missed, but we all know she is with the Jesus she so loved!!
