June Shuler Luther, 86, of Weaverville, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

A native of Bryson City, June was a daughter of the late Manley and Ellen Cline Shuler. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Rex C. Luther. Her daughter, Teresa Hyder, passed away the day after June died, on January 6, 2021.

Mrs. Luther retired from Square D. She was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church, having taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. She was an active volunteer at many places, most notable at the N.C. Arboretum.

Surviving are her son, Gary Luther (Linda); son-in-law, Gary Hyder; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Leo Stanberry and Sue Moses; and a brother, Grover Shuler.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Green Hills Cemetery, with Rev. Paul Sanchez officiating.

Mrs. Luther will lie in repose at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

The family wishes to express special thanks to caregivers Ann Workman and Opal Embler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Starnes Cove Baptist Church, 149 Starnes Cove Rd., Asheville, NC 28806, or to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC, 28731.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of June & Teresa. The Luthers were our next door neighbors when I was growing up and very good friends of my parents. Their friendship continued until the passing of my Mom & Dad. June was such a sweet lady with a beatiful smile. My sympathy to Gary and other family members.   8. I was so sorry to read of June’s passing.
    June and I went to school together and I saw her a few years ago at one of our high school alumni reunions.
    I lived across the river at Ela. My father was Dover Dean, the fire warden.
    The years pass and as we reach this age and see one of our school mate’s obituary in the paper is a reminder of how short life is.
    I cannot imagine the loss of two at the same time. Please accept my condolence and know that I am thankful for the memory of June and your family. Swain County was a good place to grow up in.
