Asheville – Karl Eugene Katner, born November 11, 1937 in Wheeler, NY, son of the late Eugene Howard and Verena Pearl Katner, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Karl graduated in 1956 from Haverling High School in Bath, NY and was a member of the Mitchellsville Methodist Church in Bath. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and past Master of the Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446. He also was a member of the Oasis Shrine in Charlotte, the Biltmore Chapter #38 of the Eastern Star and the Asheville Elk Lodge #608. In 1969 he was one of the founders of TDM Corp. in Fletcher from where he retired after 40 years of service. He also worked with the Disaster Recovery Group, Inc. as long as his health allowed. Karl is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Penix Katner; two daughters, Brenda Gaddy of Asheville and Michelle Haney and her husband, Jeff, of Fletcher; his son, Erik Katner of Asheville; five grandchildren, Dustianna and Harley Gaddy of Asheville, Erika Katner of Asheville and Sabrina and Noah Haney of Fletcher. He also is survived by one brother, Alan Katner of Maryesther, FL and a special aunt, Norma O'Brien of Bath, NY. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am Friday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian conducted by the Reverend David Honeycutt and the Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446. The lodge will open at 10:00 am. Interment will be in Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated but memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 4530 Park Road, Suite 240, Charlotte, NC 28209.

Mary Sue–I am so sorry to hear of Karls passing-I know he will be greatly missed-and I will always remember you and he came to my house after I moved in -with his little machine- tractor-or whatever you call it–to smooth out my yard and plant grass- we picked up rocks and raked all day–you all were so much help- when no one else would help-and I will always appreciate that – he was a good man-you were blessed-would like to visit w you and family tomorrow- but- I am taking care of my mom and she fell today- and we just spent 5 hours at the hospital- and I cant leave her-but will give you a call soon–God Bless you and and all of your family–you all are in my prayers–Gloria Graham Daves

  8. Mary Sue, I am so sorry to hear of Karl’s death. I was in shock when I got the call from Eddie. He looked so good when I saw you two in the grocery store right before Christmas. I will always remember our good times in Eastern Star. I pray that God will give you strength to face the difficult hours and days ahead. I pray that HE will give you a peace that passeth all understanding.
