Kathryn “Kathy” Penland Buckner, 64, of Candler, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Mission Hospital.

Born February 5, 1959 in Buncombe Co., Kathy is a daughter of Johnny William Penland and Ann Floyd Penland.

In addition to her parents, Kathy is survived by her husband, Michael “Mike” Allen Buckner; daughter, Laura McMahan (Casey); son, John Buckner; grandchildren, Austin and Evan McMahan, and a sister, Beth Tuten (Tommy).

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26, in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with Pastor Allen Rash officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

  4. I am truly sorry for your loss. I have known your family all my entire life as I grew up right next door. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and wish so much that I could be there to offer my condolences and pay my respects for the services but have had my own family emergency. Please know that your family has always been precious and dear to me and you loved💜

  5. So many memories of times with Kathy and FAmily since we were roommates in 1977 at Warren Wilson. Meals at the FAmily house, going to church, visiting as we became adults with families. Schaffer D reunions. Knowing that I could message Kathy at any point and she would understand. Hugs to all the family..

  13. I’m so very sorry to read about Kathy’s passing. She was a very dear friend during my time at WWC. We shared a lot of laughs together with the many friends we made there. I know she will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Our family wishes her family much love during this difficulty time.

  17. I just learned of Kathy’s passing. We worked together for 22 years in two different school settings. Kathy was smart, organized, knew her field, very skilled in planning and thinking ahead. She loved her family dearly. Mike, John, Laura, Beth and Tommy—I am so sorry. May you feel comfort and peace and God’s love around you.
