Kay D. Shrider, 91, of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died Tuesday Feb 4, 2014. Born in Butler, Pa. she was the daughter of Olive and W.L. Daugherty. Mrs. Shrider was an accomplished actress and vocalist. She sang in the Choir at Central United Methodist Church for over 20 years, and performed in many plays at A.C.T and S.A.R.T. Her proudest role was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her husband, Herb, spent their retirement years in service to church and community. They were active members of Central United Methodist Church, and delivered Meals on Wheels in the Montford Community for over 26 years. Kay's husband of 60 years, Herb, preceded her in death in 2005. She is survived by daughters Diane Souther and husband Joe of Asheville and Kathy DuPlessie and husband Steve and son Tom Shrider and wife Suzette of Portland Oregon. Known as KayKay to her grandchildren and many of her friends, she cherished her grandchildren Kiana Miles (Jeff), Kirkland Ahrens (Jackie) and great granddaughter, Lia Miles. Kay is also survived by her sister, Mary Adler and her husband, Jay, of Costa Mesa, California. A celebration of Kay Shrider's life will be held in the Health Care chapel in Haden Hall at Deerfield, 49 Highbridge Crossing , on Friday, Feb. 7, at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to either the music program at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or Meals on Wheels, 146 Victoria Rd. Asheville, NC 28810.
