Larry D. “Doby” Holbrook, 51, a resident of the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Oteen, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000.

Mr. Holbrook was born in Buncombe County. He served in the US Army in Vietnam, and re-inlisted in order to volunteer for a second tour of duty in Vietnam where he served until his injury in 1971.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees Baseball team and UNC Basketball. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and a life member of the VFW.

He is survived by his parents, Robert Cole and Mildred H. Holbrook of Candler; a sister, Cathey H. Drye of Matthews, NC; and three brothers, Jim Holbrook and Tommy Holbrook of Averys Creek and Bill Holbrook of the Bethel Community, Haywood County.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Norman A. Hubbard officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 277 Oak Hill Road, Candler, NC 28715.
