Larry Joe Carter, 85, of Arden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at The Lodge at Mills River.
A native of Dahlonega, GA, he was a son of the late John "Pop" Mercer and Johnna Johnson Carter. The 6th of 7 sons, Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 63 years, Dorothy Meadows Carter; one daughter, Laura Carter Fahy and her husband Michael; one son, Larry Kimble Carter and his wife Debra; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
Larry received his AA from Asheville-Biltmore College, his BS from UNC-Chapel Hill and his Masters from Western Carolina University. He retired from Taylor Instrument, where he worked as a chemist and quality control engineer. He was appointed Chairman of the Limestone Council by the Governor of NC and served as a Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member at Arden First Baptist Church and also went on many mission trips with the church.
Larry was an active member of Rosscraggon Wood, Inc. and was a 50-year member of the Valley Springs Lions Club. He was a draftsman and also enjoyed hiking, backpacking, golf and traveling. He played football, basketball and baseball in college and went on to play semi-pro baseball and minor league baseball with the Cincinnati Reds.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Arden First Baptist Church with the Reverends G. Scott Lynch and Gayle Brown officiating. Grandsons Brian Fahy, Sean Fahy, Greg Fahy and Adam Carter along with grandsons-in-law Ted Blackwood and Jared Hines will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and invites all guests to stay for a meal.
The family would like to thank everyone at Four Seasons Hospice and The Lodge at Mills River. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial donation in Larry's name to the Skyland Fire Department, 9 Miller Road, Skyland, NC 28776.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
Larry was one of the most kind and considerate men we have ever known. His faith was so evident in the many good deeds he performed. He most certainly will be with our Father in Heaven. Our hearts go out to Dot and the rest of the family. He will be greatly missed.
Such a loving, energetic, and humble man. Our condolences to the family. My husband and I will never forget how he out skied is! Prayers to all. God Bless.

We cannot tell you how much you and Larry have mean to us over these many years. We are so saddened by the passing of Larry but at the same time to be assured of Larry’s eternal living with our Lord. He was a special man and we will forever miss him in our earthly lives. All our love, prayers and support.

I am so sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. He was an outstanding person, friend, classmate and teammate, throughout the years. I will miss seeing him, as will many others. I am away from Asheville, but I want you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
I was so sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. What a fine person he was and led a good life. He’ll be remembered always in our hearts.

Dear Dot, Laura, Kim and families. It is both a sad day and happy day. Sad because there is a void in our lives where a wonderful man once occupied – but happy that Larry has reached his final destination in Heaven with our Lord.
