Resided in: Weaverville, North Carolina

Laura Marion Ayres, of Weaverville, passed away in her home on October 13, 2023.

Laura was born on December 11, 1963 at Base Hospital, in China Lake, California. She spent her childhood in Arizona and Texas, and lived throughout her adult life in Texas, Ontario, Maine, and North Carolina. She is predeceased by her mother Ann, and leaves behind her son Wayne, her sister, Julie, as well as her father Gardner and his wife Debra. She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece and nephew, and other family and friends whose lives she touched with her creativity and her independent, positive spirit.

Laura graduated from William B. Travis High School in Austin, TX in 1982, then attended The University of Texas. Laura worked in the food industry throughout her life, most frequently in cafes and coffee shops. She also was a self- employed gardener, pet sitter, and photographer. Laura was a person of many hats – both figuratively and literally. She was often seen sporting a variety of hats, much like her Great Grandmother Marian and her Great Aunt Mary, both of whom she admired deeply. Laura loved animals (she particularly adored her cats) and nature, and these were often the subjects of her photographs. In her recent years, she was very involved in her community and was a staple at the Weaverville Tailgate Market where her beautiful photos would be on display. Other hobbies Laura enjoyed were hiking in the woods, foraging for mushrooms and edible plants, creating inventive meals, watching a good movie, singing, and playing her piano and guitar. What Laura loved most in life was connecting with people through good conversation, learning from them and sharing her own knowledge. Her smile and laugh will be missed by those who knew her.

Laura’s Celebration of Life, officiated by Danny Lewis, will be held at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary on November 11, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.

  1. Jim and I are sorry to hear the passing of Laura, RIP.
Laura was a very creative person and enjoyed life.

  2. I got to know Laura through her posts on Facebook, photos she took in Weaverville and posted, and her humor came across in her postings. She already seemed like a person I wanted to meet. When she posted an interest in petsitting, I reached out to her and she became my chihuahua, Benito’s, pet sitter helping us out for our yearly trips. She made an impression on me, her humor, her gregariousness, and I can still hear her laugh. She was a character, easy to know and easy to remember, and known for her hats. Benito loved her. She will be sorely missed. RIP, Laura!

  3. OMG!!! My friend Kimberly Hawk just told me! I am in utter shock!
I’ve missed our Weaverville ladies group meeting and was glad you were always willing to just meet in the Ingles parking lot throughout Covid.
You were SUCH A HUGE HELP when we were moving out of Leicester and it always tickled me when you’d post a photo afterwards using one of the items I had given you in exchange for your help in packing and referring to it as “from the Rose-Marie Vieira Collection” 🤣
I’ll miss your collection of hats and I’m sorry I never caught up with you to learn some of your foraging skills! ❤️
