Lawrence Hilliard Mitchell

Lawrence Hilliard Mitchell, 95, formerly of Miller Road, Fairview, died Friday, March 29, 2002, in a Hendersonville nursing home. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Emory M. and Cora Whitaker Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, the mother of his children, Berch Patterson Mitchell who died 1972 and two grandchildren, Gary Mitchell and Michael Mitchell. He was retired from A&P where he worked as a head produce manager for 43 years. He was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church and a former member of Reed Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Ethel Clontz Mitchell; three daughters, Virginia Arthur and Doris Moody of Asheville and Margaret Clark of Leicester; two sons, Cecil D. Mitchell and Lawrence W. ''Mitch'' Mitchell both of Fairview; ten grandchildren, Jimmy Hall, Harry Hall, Bill Moody, Blake Moody, Emory Mitchell, Jack Hendrix, Donna Morrow, Pam Bustin, Laura Harbison and David Mitchell; nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. James H. Johnson and Randy Melton officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
