Lazelle Matthews Sampson, 93, of Leicester, passed away on August 29, 2013, at her residence, surrounded by her family, and into the arms of her Savior. She was born on March 3, 1920, in Macon Co., NC, and was the daughter of the late Rev. Grover S. and Irilla McCall Matthews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and will be greatly missed by all. Her family and church were of great importance to her and she was the oldest living member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, having joined when she was 18. She will always be remembered for the welcoming smile she had for everyone. She is survived by her daughters, Leta Murphy and husband Paul, of Morganton, Jean Vierra and husband Marvin, of Arden; son, Bill Sampson and wife Freda, of Leicester; six grandsons, Barry Murphy, wife Crystal, and step-daughter Samantha, and Randy Murphy, all of the Hickory area, Chris Vierra and wife Katherine and Tommy Vierra and wife Missy, all of Hendersonville, Baron Sampson and Sarah, of Candler, and Steven Sampson, wife Emily, and daughter Calia, of Black Mountain. Other survivors include sisters, Donna Worley, of Marshall, Dorothy Huffman and Judy Hipps, both of Canton, and Lucy Wooten, of Catawba Co.; and brother, Homer Matthews, also of Catawba Co. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kemp Battle for his wonderful dedication to Mom's well-being over the years and to CarePartners Hospice for their recent great care. Much appreciation is also given to Jean and Marvin for all they have done to see that Mom was able to stay in her own home. Her family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with a service following at 2:00 p.m. Her pastor, Rev. Bobby Smith, and nephew, Rev. Jerry Worley, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church's cemetery. 4. Aunt’s Donna,Dot,Judy,Lucy and Uncle Homer, I was so saddened to hear of Aunt Lazelle’s passing. I loved her with all my heart. She like Granny Matthews was a true lady in every sense of the word. She will be missed by all those that knew her.Her legacy of loving her family and GOD live on in the lives of all she touched.

  5. What a spiritually radiant and loving woman! Over the years, my family and I have been many times to the warm and welcoming Sampson home, never leaving without the invitation to eat with them at their table, even though we usually dropped by unannounced, never leaving without sharing many smiles and much laughter.
We never felt more at home than when we would sit on the porch with Lazelle and Jay, simply enjoying the view and being together.
Her smile was magical and her gentle devotion to God, family and friends was founded, I believe, on her ability to love unconditionally.
Thank you, God, for blessing us for so many years with Your child, Lazelle Matthews Sampson.

  6. Freda, I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother-In-Law. I pray that God’s peace and comfort are with you and your family during your time of sorrow. I think of you often and pray that you and your family are well and safe. Please keep in mind this is also a time of celebrating her new eternal life with our Lord and Savior.

    Love, Joyce
