Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Pauline Jones Penland; one son, James and wife Debbie of Asheville; daughter Brenda and fiancee Keith Bruce of Leicester; six grandchildren, Jason and wife Angela, Joseph and wife Lorrie, Joshua and Julie Penland all of Asheville, Donna Farmer of Sevierville, TN and Dena Farmer of Leicester; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jared, and Clesta Penland of Asheville.
Also surviving are brothers, Robert V. Penland and wife Pauline of Leicester, and Grover Penland of Asheville; sisters, Dollie Crabtree, Marjorie Robinson and husband Vono, Ivory Parham and husband Morris, all of Leicester, and Paris Rocket of Alexander.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lila and Reggie Penland, formerly of Yancey County, brothers, Troy, Creed, and Huelon, and sister Ruth Ellen Penland.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Raymond Shell and Keith Mosley officiating. Burial will be at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery on North Turkey Creek Road.
The family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated or memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
