Born in: Philadelphia County, PA
Resided in: Arden, NC

Arden, NC- It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leo C. Kocher, Sr., 85, of Arden, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on Friday, December 6, 2024 at his residence.

A man of laughter, Leo definitely had the gift of wit and for brightening any room with his sense of humor (like taking donuts to the staff at the diabetes clinic) and his infectious smile and mischievous look. He was an amazing PopPop. He loved (well, loved may be a strong word) to share his favorite chair when he was told there was “not no more room” and was always gracious when he was told “PopPop, I ate all your ice cream” in a sassy little voice. But he also paid it back by eating all of your honey buns if you left them “sitting alone to long”. And he was always ready to “fight the Gorgons” while wearing his paper hat as well.

Over the years, Leo had been a passionate golfer and bowler. He spent many happy hours on the greens with his friend Claude Robinson, or his son-in-law Jimmy. (Although, it may not have been very safe to allow Leo and Jimmy in a golf cart together, as neither one seemed to know who controlled the gas pedal. But it did make for a wild ride!) Whether on the greens or at the lanes, Leo was always challenging himself while enjoying the company of friends and family.

His love for the outdoors extended to his time spent working with guns, where he found both skill and joy. Whether on the golf course, the bowling alley, or at the shooting range, Leo was a man who embraced life and shared his happiness with those around him.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis, and his son, Richie, both of whom he missed immensely.

He leaves behind two children, Lee Kocher (Daina) and Lynn Jones (Jimmy); eight grandchildren, Zachary, Jackson, Natalie, Josh, Jeremy, Lily, Hunter, and Tyler and seven great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Collins, Beckham, Allie, Brileigh, Dani Sue, and Luna. His wish is that his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would carry forward his spirit and laughter.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 16, 2025 in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the hurricane victims in Western North Carolina.

Leo will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, and his deep love for his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest in peace, PopPop. You are dearly missed.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
