Leonard DeOwen Lackey, 85, of Asheville, died on Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Carolina Village Medical Center. Born in Mt. Vernon, MO, Leonard was a son of the late Wesley and Martha Fuehler Lackey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Harding Lackey, who died four years ago to the day; sister, Marjorie L. Ring; and son-in-law, Gordon Fox. Mr. Lackey was a faithful member of Reynolds Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. He will be remembered as a dedicated father who did everything he could to raise and provide for his eight children. He is survived by six daughters, Regina Fox, Debbie Austin (Bill), Dee Ann Henson (Mark), Sonia Parker (Harold), Lisa Styles (Jimmy), and Jennifer Griffith; two sons, Lennie Lackey and Jeffrey Lackey (Kitty); brothers, Leon and Arden Lackey; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Reynolds Baptist Church. Pastor Bobby Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Lackey's family wishes to express their thanks to the staffs of both the Carolina Village Medical Center and Four Seasons Hospice for their compassionate care for Mr. Lackey. Memorials may be made to the Reynolds Baptist Church Building Fund or Youth Missions, 520 Rose Hill Rd., Asheville, NC 28805. Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the Lackey family.

Leonard would keep in touch with me at O’Reilly’s when he was out driving or he would just call to ask about my family and me. He will be missed but always loved. God’s Speed Mr. Leonard.

  6. So sorry to hear about Mr Lackey. I’ve been lucky enough to have been his neighbor in Beverly Hills for 40 years. I will definitely miss the many conversations on the front step looking out to the Golf Course.
