Lillian Payne Wells, 82, of 178 Willow Creek Road, Leicester, went to be with Jesus and many loved ones Friday, June 8, 2007. Mrs. Wells was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born in Madison County and was a daughter of the late Nathan and Violet Moore Payne. She was married to Charlie G. Wells, who died in 2000, and was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Bill Shook, who died in 1995, a brother, Dale Payne, and sisters, Louetta Etherton, Lois Barger, and Alice Farris. She was a member of Big Sandy United Methodist Church where she served in various positions including Sunday school teacher and pianist. Also her singing touched many people through the years. Surviving are one daughter, Beth Shook of Leicester; one son, Keith Wells and his wife Barbara of Leicester; three grandsons, Derick Shook, Brian Wells, and Charles Shook and his wife Traci, and their son Cade, all of Leicester; one granddaughter, Terri Wells and her husband, Glenn Ratcliff of Asheville; three step-grandsons, Terry, Ronnie and Daniel Brooks; two sisters, Mae Suttles, and Lena Lundy and her husband, Bill; and one brother, Ronnie Payne and wife Dee Dee; a sister-in-law, Pearl Black and her husband, Harold. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Big Sandy United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ed Worley and Steve Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
