Lucy Snelson Hunter, 96, of 52 Huffman Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at the Laurels of Greentree Ridge. Mrs. Hunter was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Ceymour and Hester Martin Snelson, and step-daughter of the late Nannie Snelson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Oliver Hunter, who died in 1981. Mrs. Hunter worked as a customer service representative with Sears, where she retired from in 1969. She formerly taught at Ball Mountain School and worked at American Enka for nine years. She had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1958. She enjoyed canning, traveling, fishing and gardening. Surviving are her nephews, Robert W. West of Belvedere, SC, Jack Robinson of Kershaw, SC, Grover S. Robinson of Columbia, SC, George Tweed of Newport, TN, James Wike of Oak Ridge, TN, Homer Howard Wike of Asheville, Orville Wike of Sylva, David Wike of Atlanta, and Alva Wike; a niece, Eloise B. Hinson of Kershaw, SC; and a special care-giver, Connie Jones. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Revs. Sue Fitzgerald and Donald N. Welborn officiating. Burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 531 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. What a wonderful lady….. Always upbeat on everything. I’m so greatful I got to know her… we’d always talk about that ‘Harley’ ride we were going to take when she was able…. and I know she would have !!! My thoughts and prayers to the family. and to my Aunt Connie. She’s lost her buddy… but as I told her, she can always hold her head up high knowing she helped Ms. Lucy’s days be the best they could be.
