Asheville ~ Lynn C. Fox, 67, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018 in his residence.
Lynn was born July 15th, 1950 in Chattanooga, TN to the late Robert Lee Fox, Jr. and Carolyn Lee (Poindexter) Fox.
Many knew him as a personable, humorous storyteller who amused his family and friends with laughter and wise sayings (often fondly repeated and utilized by others).
Lynn was also a celebrated track athlete who achieved an NCAA Championship and All-American status while at the University of Memphis. He was inducted into both the University of Memphis Athletic Hall of Fame, and the East Ridge HS Athletic Hall of Fame. As a sprinter, his best time in the 100-yard-dash was 9.3 seconds. Several of his records still stand. Lynn, along with his fellow Chattanooga teammates Ed Hammonds and Maurice Knight, formed one of the strongest sprint relay teams in the nation. One of his favorite and original quotes was “If you have to breathe during the race, you have run too far”.
Lynn retired in 2011 as Director of Business Intelligence for HSBC Bank, USA. He and his family spent 32 years in NYC and became lifelong Yankees and Giants fans.
Moving to Asheville in 2012, Lynn and Beth were able to enjoy the sweet southern mountains filled with fresh air, clear streams, frisky bears, and friendly folks. This was also near his boyhood home of Chattanooga where many friends remain.
Lynn was so very proud of his family, especially: his wife and partner of 39 years, Beth, for her loving support and wise counsel through the years; his three daughters, Katie, Laura, and Michelle, for making their own way--he found tremendous joy in watching them grow into exceptional, intelligent, and independent women; his older brothers, Bob and Steve, who taught him early on the need to be tough, resilient and also, by example, how to set positive goals and embrace personal perseverance.
Lynn was a lover of music which he played loudly as he drove his beloved MINI Cooper convertible along the magnificent mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway. His musical Mount Rushmore was: Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and Warren Zevon. To all his friends and family he would leave this quote: “Keep me in your heart for a while” - borrowed from W. Zevon.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Groce Funeral Home, 72 Long Shoals Rd., Arden.
Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions in Lynn’s memory may be made to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation online at www.brpfoundation.org/donate , or to Friends of the Smokies online at www.friendsofthesmokies.org/donate.
I was so sorry to hear of Lynn’s death. I went to high school and also college with him, but had not seen him since then until our high school reunion a few years ago. I remember him being an excellent student as well as an excellent athlete. I was looking forward to seeing him in June at our next reunion until I head recently about how sick he was. May he rest in peace.
Michelle,
There are few harder times than losing a parent. Reading about him made me smile as I see his amazing spirit living on in you, his true legacy. May your grief be short and your memories last a lifetime.
Michelle and family, I am so sorry for your lost. You have my deepest sympathy. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Michelle and family, our hearts are with you as you fondly remember your father. In the immortal word of Bob Dylan:
When you’re sad and when you’re lonely
And you haven’t got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
Michelle, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know what it’s like to lose a parent too soon. I pray that your broken heart will be healed. With time, it will get better. Please know that I’m here for you. Let me know if there is anything you need.
Michelle and Family – May God continually bless and comfort you in your time of bereavement. We all love and are praying for you. God bless
Psalm 46:1-3
Michelle and Family, I am sorry for you loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
So sorry to hear about Lynn’s passing morning. I met Lynn at MSU, together with Ed and Maurice in the 70’s at the dorm where we were living. I was on the tennis team from Amsterdam and those three guys made me so welcome in this divided country. I am so proud to have known Lynn and to have learned from him to get self confidence and self worth by doing it the Right Way! Peace be with You, Bob Leopold.
As a member of the ERHS Class of 1968, I would like to express my condolences to the family and our heartfelt love for Lynn. We will miss him greatly.
I am deeply sorry to learn of Lynn’s passing. I had the privilege of being Lynn’s leader at HSBC from 2004-2009. I can honestly say that he was a talented leader who had the ability to blend business and technical knowledge. Though what I remember most about Lynn was his great sense of humor, humility, and his great storytelling. Lynn not only told stories, but he made them… After a key project he ordered a few cases of Moon Pies for the the team in the US and the Team in India to celebrate the accomplishment. Lynn always had an infectious smile and a kind word for everyone. We will keep Lynn and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
It is with heartfelt condolences that I post this belated note. I Met Lynn at MSU in 1968, we were teammates on the track team. He was a great athlete,
Extremely honorable & respectful of all, it was an honor and a privilege to have known him. I was hoping to reconnect with him via the internet when I found his obituary. May he rest in eternal peace.
