Madelaine Ethel (White) Frederick, devoted mother of Gayle Frederick McDonald of Loveland, OH, and Sandra Frederick Seeber of Winston-Salem, NC, died at Otterbein Retirement Living Community in Lebanon, OH on January 12, 2007 at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Thomas J. Frederick, who died in 1992. Originally, Mrs. Frederick hailed from Louisiana (New Orleans and Covington), but has been a long term resident of Asheville, NC for many years. In the late l950’s, she began her career as Executive Secretary with the North Carolina State Employment Security Commission of Asheville, a position she held for 20 years, after which, she embarked on her life long dream of going to college. She enrolled at University of North Carolina - Asheville, and in l984, she graduated with honors, having earned her B.A. degree in Literature & Drama. Ten years ago she moved to Cincinnati, OH, and for eight years prior to her death, she resided at Otterbein Retirement Living Community in Lebanon, OH. A visitation and funeral for her will be held in Asheville, NC at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where she had been a parishioner for many years, and where she also served as lector. She always counted it such an honor and a privilege to read the Holy Scriptures before the congregation. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated by the Very Rev. Fr. Wilbur N. Thomas, V.F. at noon. She will be buried in Asheville’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. A spirited and enlivening presence in the lives of many, she will be sorely missed and long remembered.
