Madge Young Burleson, 89, of 29 Deanwood Circle, Asheville, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek. Mrs. Burleson was born in Yancey County and was the daughter of the late Shelby and Dullie Guinn Young. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gray A. Burleson, who died in 2000, by a son, Dennis Gray Burleson who died in 1998, and by brothers, Ralph, Jack, and Glen Young and a sister, Marie Edge. She was a former employee of the Akzona Corp. She was a longtime member of West Asheville Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and head of the Young Married Department. She will be cherished in memory by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Annette Burleson of Hendersonville; three grandchildren, Wesley, Caleb, and Christopher; one great-grandchild, Hayden Hopkins, and a sister, Ina Young. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Rev. David Tucker and the Rev. Dr. James H. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and suggest that memorials be made to the West Asheville Baptist Church Building Fund, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  5. Madge was one of the first people to welcome Mike and me to WABC 25 years ago and remained a dear friend, along with Gray, all these years. She was a great inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed.
