Mae Wells Freeman, 93, a lifelong resident of Leicester, NC, entered the gates of Heaven on Saturday, July 9th, 2022.

Born May 31, 1929 to James Commodore Wells and Addie Mae Israel Wells, Mae never knew a stranger. She was an amazing cook who loved to share a meal while chatting with old and new friends. Mae was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church and frequent visitor of Community Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. From the moment her husband announced his calling to preach, Mae was devoted in every way to her husband’s ministry all around Buncombe and Madison County, even Indiana. Mae even found her own calling in counseling younger minister’s wives and children. While Mae and Charlie operated a full-time farm, Mae also worked at Asheville Hosiery Mill for 15 years followed by 23 years at Square D Company.

In addition to her parents, Mae is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 66 years, Reverend James Charlie Freeman, and her 8 older siblings, James, Bonnie, Maude, Pearl, Edna, Zeb, Russell, Walter.

Surviving family include her devoted son, Conley Freeman, and his wife Linda of Asheville, NC, and granddaughter Natalie Freeman of Mooresville, NC.

Homecoming service will be held on Tuesday, July 12th, at 2:00 pm at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. The Reverends Dean Rice, Matthew Sams, and Howard Self will officiate. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

The Freeman family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to CarePartners Solace Center for their care and kindness given to Mae.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made in Mae’s memory to the charity of your choice.

    I saw your mama’s face & recognized her from seeing her many times in Ingle’s years ago. She was always so friendly & you could tell that she was a good Christian lady. It is hard to give up your mama but know she is in a much better place than this old world. My sympathy to your family
