Major Glenna Mae West, 83, of Woodfin, died on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at Golden Brook Assisted Living. A Buncombe Co. native, Major West was a daughter of the late Dock Steven and Nola Gentry West. She was also preceded in death by 17 of her siblings. Major West was a Class of '50 graduate of Spring Creek High School, where she was named Valedictorian. In 1951, she entered Salvation Army Training School and in 1952, she was commissioned as a Lieutenant. Following over 40 years of service in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, she retired from the Salvation Army as a Major. Major West is survived by her sister, Lora Snow, and brother, Nathan E. West. A funeral service for Major West will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Salvation Army Church on Haywood Rd., with Major Larry Broome and Rev. Lloyd Fish officiating. Interment will follow at Woody Cemetery, in Spring Creek. Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A special thanks to the staff of Golden Living Assisted Living Center, Larry and Linda Mitchell, Teresa Griffin, and Sherry Warren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, Resource Development, P.O. Box 241808, Charlotte, NC 28224-1808.
