Fall River, Massachusetts
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Manuel Valeiro Medeiros, 90, was a born in Fall River, MA, to Antonio and Honorina Medeiros, the middle of their six children. His father died when he was ten, and Manny was nurtured by his large, extended Portuguese family. He served in the Air Force after high school graduation, and to his surprise, he was accepted into the New England Conservatory of Music where he earned his Bachelors and then a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting. It was there that Manny fell in love with teaching, and he spent his entire career in that field, first in Old Town ME, and later in Cortland New York.
In 1974 he married Linda Brilliant, who preceded him in death in 2011. Together they raised two children: Jason, who died in a swimming accident in South Africa in 2002, and Denise, who lives in Charlotte with her husband Jorge Triana and their children, Isabella and Oliver. He adored them.
He married Karen Sterling Atkinson in 2015, and she survives him at their home in Givens Estates. They traveled widely and fully lived every moment they shared.
Manny brought sunshine whenever he entered a room. He was a born entertainer and was passionate about all kinds of music. He sang in the Boston Symphony Chorus as a student at the Conservatory, and in other choral groups through his life, including both the Asheville Symphony Chorus and the Coral Society. In addition to band instruments, he played the piano by ear, and he spent many hours entertaining friends at Givens and in the Health Center there. Wherever he went, Manny made friends. He was a Pied Piper.

Manny was my high school music teacher and when I became a high school music teacher myself, he was a mentor and friend. I never could really call him Manny. Even when we were peers. He was always Mr. Medeiros to me. A few years into my stint as a teacher, I got the itch to perform. Of course I went to Manny for assistance and he helped me audition for The United States Air Force Band in Washington, DC. I got the job and credit Manny for making it happen. Because of him, I had a very successful 20-year career and experienced so many things that would never have happened had he not been there right by my side. He was such a wonderful teacher, musician, friend, and human being. The world was a much better place with him in it. Me deepest sympathies to his loving family and friends.
He was the nicest, Profesional music teacher CHS was so proud of.his students loved his mentorship. I was CHS band member 70s 60s know we all shared same rooms. Rip dear guy.we honor you.
Manny was a colleague and gracious co-staff member. He always supported our school music program with equal vigor and enthusiasm even though we were Cortland ‘s smallest school. I always had a deep respect for Manny. He worked very hard, put in many extra hours and was the consummate professional at all times.
The Cortland Enlarged City School District was very lucky to have him.

It hurts my heart to hear of Manny’s passing . A great man who loved his family and seemingly everyone he met and worked with.My Mom and I worked at Cortland Schools , Manny’s kids rode the bus I drove. My Mom and he were very good friends and after she was diagnosed with Alzheimers , we would attend concerts that Manny’s band played . He would always ask my Mom for a dance , a memory of his kindness I will never forget. Rest in peace dear friend , you will be missed .
He was a great teacher and mentor. He served the Cortland area, and all of the students in his music classes, well. May he rest in peace. My sincerest condolences to the family.
I remember Manny very well as a music teacher who inspired me to go on to be a professional musician in my own life
When I think of our time in chorus and show choir, I can only smile and then laugh at all he put up with from us kids! He made singing and practicing the musicals so fun, believing in us and having such patience! God bless and welcome you with loving arms!
Manny was my beloved host father when I spent an exchange year in Cortland, NY in 1990/1999. The whole family, but Manny in particular, welcomed me with open arms, and with his kindness, warmth and joy in all the little things in life he made me feel at home. We never lost contact throughout all the years and I feel blessed to have known and loved him!
RIP old friend and co-worker. Taught school at CHS with Manny. He was a dedicated teacher who inspired his students.
