MARGARET HAUPTLE ASHEVILLE - Margaret Harvey Elizabeth Hauptle, 102, passed away, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Becky's Rest Home, Fletcher, the beautiful place she called home for the past 2 years. She was born in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph and Anna Gross on July 7, 1908. Margaret married her husband, Frederick Wm. Hauptle, in 1950 in St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church, Philadelphia. Fred's poor health required them to move to a milder climate and they and their only child, Anne, moved to Gulfport, Fl in 1959. After her husband's death in 1960, Margaret remained unmarried. She worked for the Veteran's Administration's Regional Office in St. Petersburg, Fl until she was 70. After retiring, she remained an active volunteer in her church and community in Gulfport. When she turned 90, she moved to Houston, TX to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Richard. In 2002, she moved with them to Asheville, NC. She attended Care Partners Adult Day Center for several years, where she enjoyed activities and meals with her friends. Her devout faith as a Catholic sustained her throughout her long life. Her devotion to the Blessed Mother, Mary, was a constant source of peace to her, and she prayed the rosary often. She was a beloved member of the Basilica of St. Lawrence, Asheville, where she attended weekly Mass. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Anne, and son-in-law, Richard Bazarsky of Asheville, granddaughters Maryanne Bohn and husband, Mark, of Houston, Kelley Evans and husband, Sgt. Jake Evans, of Richlands, NC, Arika Kraut and husband, Steve, of Allen, TX, grandsons Jack Page of Houston, and Rod Bazarsky and wife, Heather of Atlanta, GA, and 5 great-grandchildren. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home, East Asheville, 856 Tunnel Road. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. C. Morris Boyd at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, D.M., Asheville. Margaret's burial will be in Philadelphia, Pa. Because Margaret loved the Basilica, her family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the Basilica of St. Lawrence, P.O. Box 1850, Asheville, NC 28802.

  1. Margaret was a blessing to have been in my life, even it was brief and near the end. I’ll always remember how her eyes would light up at the sight of her rosary. Even in silence she proclaimed her faith.
Every death is an opportunity for those still living to be reborn in our faith, in our LOVE for one another and to Shine Our Light Upon Those In the Darkness.

  2. Margaret, The HOP, was part of my family. She redefined the meaning of grandmother for me; I am joyful for having her in my life for so many years. One of my fondest memories was of Anne serving up child sized ice cream portions to my nephew and Margaret. Margaret was more excited than a child at the treat. It’s a good lesson on retaining what makes you happy, because ice cream always made Margaret happy. I’ve had a hard time getting on to write this, like it is ‘the end’, in fact, it’s just the beginning of Margaret’s life with God and being reunited with family and friends. I pray for peace for Anne and Richard, and wisdom and patience for the rest of the family as they navigate the grief process. All of the love and care I can send from Colorado,
    Melissa
