Arden ~ Margaret M. Hartney, 95, of 2533 Hendersonville Road died Thursday, October 20, 2005 at her residence. Mrs. Hartney was born September 1, 1910 in Newport, Rhode Island to the late Patrick and Bridget Dooney Murphy. She spent most of her life on Long Island, New York and had resided in Buncombe County for seven years. Mrs. Hartney was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Hartney who died in 1991 and a son, Peter M. Hartney who died in 1992. She worked as a registered nurse at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, New York for thirty years, specializing as a nurse anesthetist. She was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Adele Hartney Nealon and her husband, Paul of Asheville; a son, William F. Hartney Jr. and his wife, Mary of Boca Raton, Florida and a daughter-in-law, Maureen Hartney of Salem, New York. Mrs. Hartney is also survived by eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at St. Barnabas Catholic Church with the Reverend Father Roger Arnsparger officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society 120 Executive Park, Building 1 Asheville, North Carolina 28801. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. So many memories that I just don’t know where to begin. I had the pleasure of talking to grandma for my birthday 2 days before she died and I will never forget the words that we had and the memories we shared on the phone that night. She lived her life to the fullest and died a happy lady. Lots of love to the rest of the family at this time.
