Asheville, NC ~ Margaret Sloan Martin, 63, of 127 Springside Rd., died Saturday, August 25, 2001, at her residence.

Mrs. Martin was a native of Pickens County, SC and was the daughter of the late Rev. Roy W. Sloan and Viola B. Sloan, and was the wife, of 45 years, of Daniel Martin. She was also preceded in death by a brother Harold Sloan.

Mrs. Martin recently retired from the Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Department, where she had served for 22 years. For the last several years she served as managing director of the Skyland Recreation Center, where she will be remembered for her contribution to the health and well-being of people of all ages, from small children to senior citizens. She received a number of awards from the American Red Cross and was a member of Arden First Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Yvonne Martin of Charlotte, NC; four sons, Michael Martin and Robert Martin both of Atlanta, GA, Bryan Martin of Aliso Vejo, CA, Allen Martin of Raleigh, NC; four sisters, Frances James, Betty Merck, and Brenda Holden all of Easley, SC and Joyce Dellinger of Indiana and two brothers, Wayne Sloan and Elton Sloan, both of Easley, SC.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 11:00 AM, in Arden First Baptist Church conducted by the Reverends Stephen Summers and Charles Phillips. Interment will be in Broad River Baptist Church Cemetery in Smyrna, SC at 2:30 PM.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 PM until 9:00 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, 72 Long Shoals Road, Arden, NC where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

  39. Margaret served our community for many years and was an institution at Skyland. When I saw her earlier this year she told me that she remembered me as a child taking lessons at Skyland. There are hundreds and perhaps thousands of others who passed through Skyland that were touched by her love.

    I know she suffered for a long time and I don’t understand why. But through that difficult experience you showed her how much her family loved her.

    I and the entire working staff of SASHTO 2001 were so saddened to hear of Margaret’s death while we were in Asheville last weekend and early this week.
