Margie Pitman McGill, 86 of Candler passed away January 8, 2021 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center from COVID19 complications.

Born in Tigerville, SC she lived most of her life in Asheville and Candler. Margie was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Robert H. “Bob” McGill and daughter Elizabeth “Beth” McGill McCain.

She and her husband met when they were children at the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC. and grew up having a “deep faith in God.”

She is survived by daughter Jennie McGill Blevins and husband Tom of Ayden, NC and son-in-law Robert McCain, husband of the late daughter Beth.

Mrs. McGill retired from the Asheville Fire Department having worked as secretary to the Chief for 35 years. She was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church and volunteered with ABCCM in the soup kitchen. She was a devoted, loving mother and wife and an excellent cook who enjoyed baking and distributing her pound cakes throughout Buncombe County. She always had a ready smile and brought joy to all who knew her.

A private service and burial will take place for the immediate family at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Dennis Thurman officiating.

The family wishes to express much gratitude to the “heroes” at Pisgah Health Care Center for their excellent loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home; PO Box 1178; Greenwood, SC 29648-1178.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.

  1. I posted a pic on the memories of Aunt Margie and Uncle Bob loving up on Alyssa at Halloween. They loved her coming to trick or treat them. We all are gonna miss her. Aunt Margie was the last of the McGill hierarchy. Now she’s with Bob, Beth, Ed & Jane, Bill & Gerri.

  2. Margie was such a wonderful lady. Oh my how she took care of all us firefighters at Asheville Fire Department. She is a lady that touched many lives and left lasting memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you the family.

Thank you for teaching us values and that fun times spent together is priority over “any of those dust bunnies floating around.” Thank you for giving us the blessing of you. I love you and you are in my heart for ever.

  4. Sorry hear of the passing of great woman. She was very considerate of every firefighter at the fire department. She loved deer meat, every time we had that meals. She will be missed by the firefighters that knew her. Hope to see on the other side. My God bless.

  5. Jennie, so sorry to learn of your Mother’s death. She lived Matthew 5:16. God let her light shine brightly to all of us firemen. We were blessed to have known her and to work with her. May God bless you and comfort you in the days ahead is my pray for you.

    So sorry for your loss. Margie was so special to our family she was so good to her firefighters & they all loved her.I pray for comfort for you at this time your mom will always hold a special place in our heart & so many memories of her.
