Marian Grimes Russell, 89, of Asheville, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Hospice Solace Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Russell was born April 14, 1916 in Englewood, TN, and was a daughter of the late Thomas Donald Grimes, Sr. and Nellie Bruner Grimes. She and her husband of 63 years, Donald H. Russell, have made their home in Asheville since 1946. Mrs. Russell retired with her husband in 1985 after 35 years as co-owners and operators of the Friendly Grocery and Delicatessen in West Asheville. She and her parents were also charter members of the West Asheville Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Donald H. Russell; her son, Dennis E. Russell and his wife Judy Chandler Russell of Roswell, GA, and a grandson Jonathan Alan Russell and his wife Andrea Price Russell of Kennesaw, GA. Her family will receive friends at Groce Funeral Home at 1401 Patton Avenue between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2005, followed by a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. at Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler. The Rev. Ken Lewis will officiate. Memorials may be made to West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  3. May God’s blessings be bestowed upon Mr. Russell and his family. I remember Mrs. Russell when I was a child growing up in West Asheville until I moved away. I always visited Friendly Grocery when I was in town. Both Mr. & Mrs. Russell were the nicest couple that I have seen in a long time.
