Marianna Young Conner, 89, died on Sunday, January 9, 2022.

A native of Buncombe County, Marianna was a daughter of the late Joe Herman and Mary Louise Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe D. Conner; daughter, Joleen Miller; and son, Jeff Conner.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Misty Hunter, Wes Conner, Clint Conner, Mitch Miller, Rafe Conner and Russ Conner; siblings, Joe Young, Jack Young and Anita Hendrix; son-in-law, Ben Miller; and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was a graduate of Sand Hill High School and retired from the US Postal Service.

Through the years, you could often find Marianna at a Hominy Valley or Enka ball field supporting her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She rarely missed a single game. As the matriarch of her large family she enjoyed hosting family events, preparing meals, and keeping everyone in line with her feisty spirit. For everyone who graced her door, she always gave you her unfiltered opinion, but you left with a full stomach, and a good laugh.

The funeral service for Mrs. Conner will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at Oak Hill United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

Guestbook

  1. Bill and I will be unable to attend the service but please know that we are praying for peace and comfort for all of you!

  2. I spent a lot of time at the Conner’s growing up, especially on their basketball court. To know Her was to love her. She always made me laugh with her great sense of humor. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. May God comfort you all today and in the days ahead. All our love and prayers.

  3. I am so sorry for the loss of your precious loved one! She was such a sweet person! Love and prayers for comfort and peace!

  4. What an honor it was to know her this past year! Marianna had such a lion’s heart and sweet, kind soul. How she let herself grow to allow a caregiver in her home and her heart! Her courage to face and accept the big changes this year brought her was astonishing at times. Sometimes she’d joke and ask why I put up with her! I would tell her I only work with the tough women. Then we’d sing: Stayin Alive! Rest now, dear Marianna. You will be alive and remembered.

  5. We will miss you, Marianna, but we will meet again. No one will ever replace you in our Conner family…you took care of all of us so many times when we dropped in unannounced. You laughed at our stories and loved our children. You fed us on Sundays (and always made a fresh pot of coffee for me). It was so evident that your family was the center of your universe and you accepted our kids as your own. We will miss you dearly but know that we’ll reunite at your big table in Heaven one day. Rest now in peace. You have earned your golden wings!

  6. So sorry for your lost. Marianne was a great lady. Everybody that knew her are feeling the lost. Love to all of you. Trust the lord. He is watching over everybody.

  7. Marianna will surely be missed. She was so much fun. A lady that pulled no punches and kept you laughing. For the family, she has seen her Savior and Heaven is having her welcoming party. Prayers are sent your way from all of us.

  8. We are so sorry for your loss, your grandmother was one special lady, loved running into her many times when shopping at Ingles and always enjoyed being around her at sporting events through the many years since Enka became the school of our community, so to say we go along way back, we do and enjoy the trip we made. She will be missed by many and she left us with many memories and good stories. When you think of her, just smile and say she never pulled any punches and never left you to wonder what she thought. REST IN PEACE AND GOD BLESSED ALL OF US BY KNOWING YOU .

  9. Misty, Mitch, Ben and dear family…
I’m so very sorry for the loss I know you feel, but praising HIM for the know of HIS promise! Marianna was most certainly one of a kind, and will be greatly missed. I’m so blessed to have known her, I so loved all her stories and always appreciated her welcoming spirit, opening her home to family and friends, and treating my “little” boy and I as one of her own. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I pray that you have the peace and comfort knowing she is now with her precious Savior, and once again with Joe, Joleen and Jeff.
Much love and God bless you all,
    Vonda

  10. Marianna was a fiesta woman but had a great heart and never met a stranger. I am praying for the entire family.

  11. She was the matriarch of a wonderful family ! Marianna and Joe were parents of athletic and talented children .
Her honesty and wit will be missed by all who knew her.

  12. We enjoyed many years watching our son and her grandsons play ball, all kinds of ball! She was the greatest cheerleader on and off the field. Her home was always open! She will be greatly missed as the matriarch of their family.

  13. I will never forget this lady. I sat through many football games with her. She made me laugh so much! Please know that you all will be in our prayers and we love you all.
    Van and Debbie Allen

  14. I had the pleasure of working with Marianna every Saturday and she was such a joy to be around. My prayers and condolences are with the family during this difficult time. She will definitely be missed.

  15. Laura Lynn Cato Metzger

Our Mom and Dad had a longstanding friendship of many years before becoming “back door neighbors” when Dad retired to Candler. She set an example for me after our adult son passed away by the way she proceeded with faith after losing both of her adult children. If “Miss Marianna” could be that strong then I surely could. We will miss her mightily. May she be joyfully greeted in Heaven!

  16. Kevin & Heidi Sutton & family. Thank you dear Marianna, for always being so kind and hospitable to us. Your smiling face will be missed.

  17. So sorry to hear of Marianna’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and friends. May God grant you peace and comfort.
