Marie Sluder Merrell, 95, of Jamestown, NC, died Friday, May 29, 2015, at her home. A native of Leicester, NC, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Lucy Sluder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon M. (Pete) Merrell, son David M. Merrell, sisters LeVenia Allen, Wylma Morgan and Louise Foster, and brothers Glenn, Stans and Arliss Sluder. Mrs. Merrell was a graduate of Leicester High School and Blanton's Business College. She worked for 52 years as credit manager for Johnson-Chandley Lumber Co. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Asheville, and a former member of Biltmore Baptist Church. Mrs. Merrell moved to Jamestown, NC to be near her daughter Deana, and had resided there the last 18 years. Mrs. Merrell is survived by her daughters, Deana Freeman and husband Darrell of Jamestown, NC, and Marlene Flanders of Augusta, GA; granddaughter, Kimberly Freeman Gauldin; grandson, David M. Carter; great-grandsons, Zachary and Nathan Carter, and Will and Eli Gauldin; and brothers, Harold Sluder of Skyland, and Ronald Sluder, of Leicester. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful caregivers who loved Marie and were her special companions. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

  7. Deana Kay and Marty, I am so sorry to learn of your Mom’s passing., she was always such a kind and gracious lady.. All these years later, I still have not found anyone who can match her homemade chicken salad! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
