Marie Van Hassel

Marie Van Hassel, 95, of Hendersonville, passed away, Sunday, March 26, 2017. Marie was born September 10, 1921 in Passaic, NJ, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Harajda and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Nicholas Harajda, Jr. and Michael Harajda. She was a US Navy veteran of W.W. II, serving at the US Naval Air Station, Anacostia, DC from 1943 to 1945, achieving the rank of Seaman Third Class. She was a former member of the Second Reformed Church in Little Falls, NJ, served as a volunteer on the West Paterson, NJ, First Aid Squad and was formerly employed as a clerk with the US Postal Service in Little Falls, NJ for 21 years. Marie is survived by two sons, Gordon Van Hassel of North Dakota and Alan Van Hassel and his wife, Susan, of Hendersonville. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, March 31, 2017 in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC with military honors provided by the US Navy Funeral Honors Team. A reception for family and friends will be held immediately after the interment at the Calvary Fellowship, 2035 Jeffress Road, Mills River, NC 28759. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
