Marion Elizabeth Mayfield-Johnson, born 1927 in Norristown, PA, died September 23, 2024 at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, where she was a longtime resident.

The daughter of Mary King and Paul Carlyle Mayfield, she graduated from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA in 1949. After teaching school for one year in Nazareth, PA, Marion worked five years for the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC, and twenty years for the United States Foreign Service, serving in diplomatic and consular posts in Athens, Bangkok, Toronto, Curacao, Stockholm, Bern, and Ottawa, retiring in 1978.

In 1980, she married Edward (Mack) Johnson and resided in Albany, NY until moving to Asheville in 1989. Mack shared Marion’s love of travel, and they especially enjoyed trips to Russia, Burma, China and Vietnam. They also enjoyed the companionship of their two cats, Annie and Dolly, for many years. Marion was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Center for Creative Retirement, the Asheville Symphony Guild, and volunteered with various community organizations.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert and his wife. She is survived by one nephew, Charles Mayfield and his wife, Erika, of Washington State, as well as several great nieces and nephews.

Marion’s ashes will be scattered in the Urban Memorial Garden at Grace Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Residency Fund at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
