Martha Crook Houghton, of 24 Evelake Drive, Asheville, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the Hospice Solace Center.

Mrs. Houghton was born December 20, 1929, the daughter of the late Foy Crook and Loice Crook Franklin. She was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was retired from American Enka. She later worked at Belks at the Asheville Mall. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Chunn’s Cove Road.

She is survived by her daughter, Caryl Anne Houghton Coleman and her husband, William Fred Coleman, Jr. of Asheville; two sons, Richard A. (Rick) Houghton of Asheville and George Dale Houghton and his wife Darlene Greene Houghton of Candler; one half-sister, Nancy Crook Simpkins of Leicester; a sister-in-law, June D. Crook of Candler; four grandsons, George Bryan Houghton of the US Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, Mark Daniel Houghton of Candler, Jeffrey Scot Houghton of El Paso, TX, and Patrick Andrew Houghton of Candler; one granddaughter, Erin Marie Houghton of El Paso; and life-long friends, Hattie Carland Miles and Evelyn Smith Wright.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 Monday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with burial to follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.

Her family will receive friends from 7 - 9 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and at other times will be at her residence.

  1. Martha has been a very dear friend of mine for years. I met her as her hairstylist, and have been friends ever since. I will sadly miss her, as she was a very loving,caring person–and loved her family and grandchildren dearly. What a pleasure to have known the wonderful lady. I will miss you Martha.
