Martha Edna Coward Smith, 90, of Leicester, died Monday, October 5, 2015, at Mission Hospital.
A native of Madison Co., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sally Brown Coward. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James A. Smith, sister Jewel Towns, and brothers Hardy and Dean Coward.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed canning, gardening, and cooking. She was a member of Newfound Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, James S. Smith of Leicester; daughter, Brenda Alene Kimbrough and husband Charles James of Taylor, MI; grandchildren, James Matthew Smith and wife Kara, and Stephen Douglas Smith; sister, Mary Jo Goforth, niece, Debbie Helton, and several other nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith will lie in state at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. on Wednesday and Thursday, and the family will then receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at the Highland Cemetery in Rogersville, TN.

We loved Mrs. Martha and will miss her, but we know she is in heaven with Jesus.
Dear Stephen and James,
I know Ms. Martha is in a happy and perfect place. I remember all those Sunday mornings when she would bring you both to church, each one setting on each side. One could just see the love there. She gave ya’ll the greatest and all important gift there was to give, and that was teaching you to love Christ and walk in his path. We are all better off, having known her.
I know she loved her boys greatly. Sending my heartfelt sympathy.
A wonderful person I enjoyed going to church with. She will be missed. My prayers are with the family.
