Martha Jane Pittillo, 84, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Universal Healthcare in Fletcher.

Mrs. Pittillo was born in Buncombe County to the late Earl and Susanna Presley Pittillo. She was also preceded in death by a son, Brian Whitaker; three brothers, George Pittillo, Clyde Pittillo and David Pittillo and a sister, Juanita Ray Hall.

Martha was a people person. She enjoyed listening to Bluegrass Music and loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren with all her heart.

She is survived by her son, Eugene Whitaker; a sister, Sarah Ray; three grandchildren, Bradley Whitaker, Amy Warren (Joel) and Justine Diller (Seth); a daughter-in-law, Lori Diller Whitaker and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden with Chaplain Wilson Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery.

  3. Jane was a wonderful friend for over 60 years and she never changed . Jane was loved by her family and all who knew her. I will truly miss her as she was a best friend. I visited her several times in the rest home and she still had that smile and always gave me a big hug and asked me to come back. I loved this sweet friend and will truly miss her. Hattie.

  14. I worked with Jane at Harrisons Publishing Co. in West Asheville, NC for 10 years. She was always smiling and always had a kind word for you. We were fortunate enough to get invites to her Famous Bluegrass gatherings and great food and music. The Best! So sorry for your great loss . She was One in a million. Rip Friend
