Born in: Dayton, OH
Resided in: Candler, NC

We are sad to announce the passing of Martha Jane Tierney Spurrier of Candler on May 18, 2023, at the age of 90. Martha went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loved ones.

Born July 3, 1932, in Dayton, OH, Martha was a daughter of the late Paul and Myra Eyer Tierney. She was also predeceased by her younger sister Judy Ann Tierney, her husband of 45 years, Harold Spurrier, a grandson Chris Spurrier (42) and a great granddaughter Autumn Ball (infant).

Surviving is her son Steve (Kitty); daughters Roxie (Perry) Trombini, Suzie Spurrier, and Amy Newberry; stepsons David (Katie), Bill (Ann), Mike (Pam), Dan Spurrier; 10 grandchildren Krissy Ball, Anthony Trombini, John Spurrier, Josh Newberry, BrandonTrombini, David Ballard, Phillip Price, Cody Brady, Megan Trombini, Katie Orpen; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Her younger years were spent in Ohio. However, her family moved to Florida halfway through her junior year of high school where she transferred to, and finished schooling at Ann Lisbeth Seese Private School. She attended and graduated from Webber College in Lake Wales, Fla. After college she moved to Black Mountain N.C. where she met the love of her life, Harold Spurrier.

Martha was a firm believer in a good, strong work ethic in which she instilled in her children, working clerical jobs at Western Southern Insurance Co., Quaker Oats feed mill, and the Asheville Housing Authority, from where she retired after more than 30 yrs of faithful service. She proved time and time again that she truly believed in her family and did whatever was necessary to provide for them and support them.

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, and square-dancing with the Asheville Allemanders. One of her favorite things to do was watch baseball with her loving husband which continued even after his passing. She was a huge fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds. Those who knew her know she would greet you with a hug (never a handshake), and she was a stickler for proper grammar.

She was a member of Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and loved the Lord and her church. Martha was a devoted, dedicated, and loving wife and mother who will be sorely missed.
