Marvin Hulan Bates, Sr., 85, of 200 Tunnel Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at the Asheville VA Medical Center. Mr. Bates was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Alford and Ella Spivey Bates. He was formerly married to the late Ruby Elkins Bates. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a retired truck driver. Surviving are one daughter Dorothy Bates of Asheville; one on Marvin H. Bates, Jr. of West Virginia; one sister Edith B. Lance of Candler, one grandson, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at Black Mountain with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
