MARY A. VYCITAL Mary A. (Mrs. Charles) Vycital, 85, of 457 Baird Cove Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, January 24, 2001, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. Mrs. Vycital will be remembered as a teacher in the McHenry, Illinois school systems. Her teaching career covered a span of forty-six years, most of which was spent in the McHenry Elementary School System. She retired from teaching in 1981. She and her family were selected as the McHenry family of the year in 1980 and served as parade marshals for the McHenry Fiesta Days. Mary Vycital was born at Dundee, IL on August 11, 1915, the oldest child of Louis J. Althoff and Frances Brueggemann Althoff. She was a resident of McHenry since 1922 and moved to Franklin in 1994 to be near her sons. She graduated from McHenry High School as valedictorian of her class and graduated cum laude from Northern Illinois University. Memberships include Saint Mary of the Assumption Christian Mothers Society, Retired Teachers Associations (national, state and county), McHenry County Historical Society, McHenry County Senior Citizens Council, and the McHenry Landmark Commission. On June 24, 1940, she married Charles Vycital at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in McHenry. She is survived by two sons, USAF Retired Lt. Col. Mark Vycital and USAF Retired Col. Gary Vycital; two grandsons, three granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Rockford, IL and Anita Beckenbaugh of Webster, WI. Besides her husband Charles and her parents, one sister, Esther Chase and one brother, Cletus Althoff, preceded her in death. Mrs. Vycital will be buried January 27 next to her husband and her parents in the Saint Mary of the Assumption Cemetery in McHenry. A Memorial Mass will be offered at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Franklin, NC on Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Francis of Assisi Church Youth Group or the Macon County Emergency Services. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, Asheville, is assisting her family.
