Mary Elizabeth Fairchild Batts, 81, of Candler, died on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Laurels of Greentree Ridge. A native of Candler, Mrs. Batts was a daughter of the late Roy and Mildred Taylor Fairchild. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Hampton and Martha Netherton and a brother, George Fairchild. Mrs. Batts was a veteran, serving two years in the U.S. Navy. She retired in 1993 following 30 years with the Buncombe County School System. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Curtis Batts; daughters, Diane Holder and Teresa Smith (Robert); son, Michael Batts; brother, Roy Dennis Fairchild (Linda); grandchildren, Danielle Pressley, Jamie Pressley, Amber Smith, and McKayla Smith, and one great-grandson, Lincoln Levins. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Browns View United Methodist Church with The Revs. Dr. Thomas Batts and Jody Halstead officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
