Asheville – Mary Edwina Nims Hogan, 88, of Deerfield Retirement Community passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Mission Hospital.
Mrs. Hogan was born February 20, 1926 in Clay Center, Kansas to the late Arthur Lee Nims, Jr and Mary Edwina Pecham Nims. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Hiram Hogan, Jr.
Mary loved Art. She was an Art Educator all of her career. She spent her childhood and early adult life in Macon, GA where she taught elementary and high school art. In 1971 she accepted a position at West Georgia College as professor of art education. In her last semester at West Georgia College she was Artist in Residence in Cortona, Italy where she made many beautiful paintings of Italy. She also traveled extensively for other art-related expeditions around the world. In her most recent years she taught water color painting at the Deerfield Retirement community. She was surrounded by her dogs all of her life including her favorite Scottie, Duncan.
Mary is survived by her daughter; Mary David Brantley-Carter and her husband, John; a brother, Arthur Lee Nims, III; two grandchildren, Kimberly Brantley Longo and Leigha Brantley and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the St. Giles Chapel of Deerfield Retirement Community with Reverend Morgan Gardner officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society, 14 Forever Friend Ln, Asheville, NC 28806.
