Mary Jean Whitt Foister passed away on February 25, 2024 at the age of 95. Her two daughters were on each side of her at the time of death, which was exactly how she wanted it to be. Mary was deeply devoted to her family and close friends. She was a person of faith throughout her life, and was especially active in her prayer life. She regularly prayed for family and friends, for world challenges, and for animals and people who were suffering or facing difficult situations.
Mary was born in Barnardsville, NC on August 24, 1928 and lived most of her life in Asheville, NC. Mary and her husband, Claude, lived in Anchorage, Alaska for seven years shortly after they were married. Mary often spoke of her love of Alaska and that adventurous period of time in her life. It was there that she met her best friend, Joy Higgins, and their lifelong close friendship lasted 70 years. Mary had her first daughter, Jeanne, while still living in Alaska, and her daughter Cathy came along shortly after they moved back to Asheville. She also had two grandchildren she adored, Maren McGowan and Cory McGowan, who lovingly called her Mundy. Mary worked most of her career at the Buncombe County Courthouse as a deputy clerk, and valued many of the friends and colleagues she met there. She remained healthy and active throughout her life. She enjoyed walking and going to the gym to lift weights. She developed relationships in unique ways and had a way of touching the lives of others by her beautiful spirit and kindness.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Claude E. Foister; her parents, Marriett Whitt and Jessie Gentry Whitt; siblings, Homer Whitt, Blanche Whitt, Irene Riddle and Ray Whitt. She is survived by her daughters, Jeanne McGowan and Cathy Foister; her grandchildren, Maren McGowan and Cory McGowan; her sister, Louise Justice; and many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was held on March 2, 2024 at Green Hills Cemetery.
Mary is deeply loved and cherished by her family. She will continue to vibrantly live on in the many precious memories they have of her.
