Born in:
Bartlesville, Oklahoma
Resided in:
Asheville, North Carolina
Mary Jo Trail was born Mary Jo Weaver on January 28, 1937 in Bartlesville, OK. She passed early on February 14, 2025 at the age of 88 in Asheville, NC. She had a happy childhood, loved school, and had many close friends. She graduated from University of Kansas in 1958 with a degree in physical therapy. In her summers off from college she worked in Colorado Springs and on Cape Cod. Upon graduation, she followed her dream of traveling, moving first to California and then to Hawaii.
In Hawaii, Mary Jo met her husband who was in the navy and continued her travels to Pennsylvania where she gave birth to her first child, Regina. From there they went on to Boston, Texas, Michigan, and Washington, DC. Her husband then joined the Foreign Service and she lived with him and her three children in Germany. Next, they lived in Sierra Leone and Mary Jo went to Spain for a month to give birth to Amy, the last of her four children. She went on to live in Nigeria, Thailand, and South Africa. She maintained her career as a physical therapist, working in the States in between posts and volunteering her services at orphanages when overseas.
Post divorce, Mary Jo continued her career as a physical therapist with renewed passion until she retired at the age of 62. She worked with children, athletes, seniors, and ultimately specialized in working with brain trauma patients and their families. She was loved and adored by her patients with much appreciation expressed by their families.
She was devoted to her family, caring for her mother in her last years, always supporting her children and grandchildren, often providing care for many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren over the years. After she retired, she lived in Asheville, NC near her daughter, Angie, often visiting her other children and grandchildren until she could no longer travel and then enjoyed many visits from them.
Mary Jo enjoyed life and was grateful for her many blessings. She coached softball, loved dancing, cruises, beach and pool parties, and tennis. She won golf and bowling tournaments, including the Mother and Son Reston Golf Club Championship with her son, George. She made amazing feasts for every holiday, taught her children to make popcorn and cranberry chains for the Christmas tree, and sewed award winning costumes for Halloween. Although a bit of a teetotaler, one of her favorite treats was to enjoy a Pina Colada while watching the sunset at the beach.
Her deep faith and her love of Bible study sustained her through many challenges. We will remember her for her heartbreaking beauty, wry sense of humor, thoughtful intelligence, progressive ideas, and, most of all, her dedication to her family.
She is survived by children Regina Trailweaver (Steven Robbins), Angela “Angie” Trail (David Eichner), George Trail IV (Melanie Katz) and Amy Trail (Brett Allan); grandchildren, Angel Trail, Rebecca Hall, Daniel Hall, Justin Hall, Noah Shearer, Rachel Madsen, Naomi Madsen, Megan Allan, Emma Allan, Kelsey Allan, Ben Allan and George Trail V and great-grandchildren, Mateo Carillo Madsen, Lila Mourino-Madsen, Levi Fisher Trail, Silas Fisher Trail, Cuilean Friedrichs Hall and Arrow Friedrichs Hall.
A Funeral Service will be held starting at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 17 in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with burial to follow at Roberts Memorial Park. Beautiful, smart, progressive, determined. My mother was a woman who taught me so much about navigating the world. Taught me how to make a home and to love and support my family unconditionally. I will
Miss her. And she gave me a curiosity of the world. Love you, Mommy!
My Aunt Mary Jo became a surrogate mother to me after my own mother passed. She leaves a legacy of unconditional love and unwavering support. I’m grateful for all the memories, laughs and advice.
She will be missed dearly.
Love you Aunt Jo and say hello to Grandma Weaver and our mother for me!
