Mary Lou Cheek Messer

Mary Lou Cheek Messer, 81, of Asheville, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at her residence. Born in Barnardsville, NC, Mary was a daughter of the late Herbert George and Katherine Jones Cheek. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Betty Sue Yarborough, and brother, Robert Cheek. Mrs. Messer worked for 35 years at St. Joseph's Hospital, and following retirement an additional eight years at Sam's Club. She volunteered for both the Nazarene Christian School and the Republican Party. She was a member of Morgan Hill Baptist Church and was a former member of Cedar Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Messer is survived by her husband, James E. Messer; son, David Randall Messer (Tabitha); brothers, Joseph Cheek, Herbert Cheek, and Maurice Cheek; grandchildren, Jackson Messer and Randi Lunsford (Aaron); great-grandchildren, Abigail Lunsford and John Isaac Lunsford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service for Mrs. Messer will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Morgan Hill Baptist Church, Barnardsville, NC. The Rev. Roy McPeters will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
