Mary Magdalia Sams Rhymer, 77, of Givens Estates, Asheville, died Tuesday, February 26, 2002, in an Asheville hospital.

Mrs. Rhymer was born in Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Cora Bell Willis Sams. She was married to Howard Wesley Rhymer who died in May, 2000. She was a member of Emma United Methodist Church.

She served in the US Army Quartermaster Corps during WW II and was a former LPN at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. She was also a former eldercare nurse in Myrtle Beach and served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader for a number of years.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Anne Rhymer of Asheville; one son, Ronald Rhymer and his wife Gail of Lexington, SC; four grandchildren, Ronda Rhymer Smith of Lexington, SC, and Adam Smith, Colin Redpath, and Anna Kate Hall of Asheville; and one great-grandson, James Jefferson Smith III of Lexington.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon Thursday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with the Revs. Christy Harley, Wes Sharpe and Roy Faulk officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery.

Her family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that memorials be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-2999.
