Mary Sue Penland, 62, of Candler, died on Monday, March 30, 2015, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe Co., Mrs. Penland was a daughter of the late Arthur Glen Stines and Mary Frances Weih Stines Adams. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Crystal Marie Hensley. Mrs. Penland is survived by her husband, William R. Penland; daughter, Donna Gail Hensley; son, Michael Anthony Sluder; sister, Barbara Hawkins; brothers, Tommy Stines and Glenn Stines; aunt, Helma Whitworth and uncle, Harold Stines; nieces, Kim Morrow, Sheila Tweed, and Barbie Melton; nephew, Nathan Stines; grandchildren, Alisha Kay Hensley, and Christopher David Hensley; and great-grandson Zane Alexander Hensley. A funeral service for Mrs. Penland will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Jimmy Page officiating. Interment will follow at Penland Chapel Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Penland Chapel Cemetery, c/o Rhonda Hall, 481 Old Newfound Rd., Leicester, NC 28748.
