Mary Wilson Walker

Mary Wilson Walker, 88, of Pop Walker Road, went home to be with the Lord, September 14, 2014. Mrs. Walker "Nanny," was born in Asheville and lived in Candler most of her life. She was the daughter of the late C.T. and Gertrude Wilson. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Fred "Pop" Walker, a daughter-in-law, Connie Greene Walker, and a grandson, David Allen "Festus" Walker. She was an active member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of UNC-G. She taught Home EC and English at area schools. But the role she cherished was being a mother and Nanny. She treasured spending time with her family and investing in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's lives. She was known to many as "Nanny!" Anyone who walked into her home left with a full belly and the love from Nanny. Mrs. Walker loved the Lord and sharing his word. She loved knitting; many have wrapped their babies in a blanket knitted by her. She enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge buddies. Left to cherish her memory and carry on her love of family are a son, David Walker, of Mills River; a daughter, Sandra Walker Holbrook, of Candler; grandsons: Scott Holbrook and wife Tobi, Dane Holbrook and wife Tonya, and Bo Walker; a granddaughter-in-law, Karen Walker Henson; five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; sisters, Evelyn Coggins and Betty Pressley; and many life long friends. A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Montmorenci United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry C. "Hank" Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.

  1. Terry and I were deeply saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. She was a very talented and gifted lady and will be greatly missed. When my Mother was fighting for her life in the hospital Mary made a prayer shawl for her and brought it to her room. My Mother had the shawl wrapped around her when we received the news that no further treatment would be possible. It gave her comfort and is now a treasured family possession. Mary was so kind and loving to everyone she came in contact with and we were blessed to have known her. Our prayers are with the family.

  9. We at the Sand Hill Community Garden always looked forward to chatting with Mary when she would pick up our harvests and join us at our potlucks. We missed her this season and will always miss her, but with each new season and harvest will come our fond memories of Mary. We were very lucky to get to know her. Please accept our condolences.
