Asheville - Mattie Wells Henderson, 93, of the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001.

A native of Leicester, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Dorcas Reynolds Wells and wife of the late Pierce P. Henderson, who died in 1979. She also was preceded in death by her five brothers, one sister and her son, Joseph William Henderson.

Mrs. Henderson was a member of Central United Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Henderson Shipley, and her husband Bruce, of Asheville; son, Thomas W. Henderson, and his wife Melinda, of Asheville; five grand-children and ten great-grand-children.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am Friday at Green Hills Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Blackburn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or to Meals on Wheels, 40 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801.

  2. From her Central Methodist Family and representing the Central Homebound Visitors. We had a nice visit with Mrs.Henderson last fall at Deerfield. Our sincere sympathy. We have known her for over 40 years. She was a lovely and gracious lady and will be fondly remembered.
