Maude Virginia Gillespie Rogers, 97, of Leicester, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at The Laurels of Summit Ridge. She was born on June 16, 1913 in Leicester, and was a daughter of the late Robert Owen Gillespie and Dora Mears Gillespie. She was married to the late Conley W. Rogers who passed away in July 1982. Upon graduation from Leicester High School in 1930, she worked at American Enka Corporation, Asheville Hosiery Mill and retired from Mars Manufacturing in 1975. She was a long standing member of Bell United Methodist Church in Leicester. She is survived by two sons, Ronald W. Rogers of Leicester and Robert Owen Rogers (Avonne), of Rutledge, TN. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Connie Rogers-Newcome (Tom) of Glen Rock, PA, Derrick Rogers (Pam) of Weaverville and Dawn Todt (Christian) of Asheville, a great-granddaughter, Christie Martin, and a great-great granddaughter, Aydyn Martin of Candler as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings Mark Gillespie, Ruth Gillespie Sluder, Clem Gillespie Teague, Nora Gillespie Bridges and Luke Gillespie. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Graveside service at Bell United Methodist Church will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. George M. Davis officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bell United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 581, Leicester, NC 28748.

  4. Grandmother Rogers was such a sweet soul whose love and character always shone in her smiling eyes. They just twinkled when she smiled. She isn’t in pain now and heaven must be rejoicing at the news of her arrival! She had such an amazing, positive attitude and that allowed her to remain in her own home for so long. She will be missed by all of us who loved her. Our prayers are with all of you.
